Why do Syracuse students walk 2 miles to get to school?

Augustine Wait, 16 years old, walks alone to and from Henninger High School in Syracuse (video). She moved to the U.S. from a refugee camp in Thailand when she was 11. She says the walk is too long because it’s cold, snowy, dark and dangerous.

Current policy dictates that the Syracuse school district and Centro, the city’s transportation provider, give free bus passes to high schoolers who live 2 miles or more from school.

Augustine and her friends, backed by teachers, parents and community members, have protested the policy at a school board meeting and outside the Centro hub.
